Balthus (1908–2001) is viewed as one of the last great masters in twentieth-century art. The planned retrospective at the Fondation Beyeler will bring together a wide range of important paintings from every phase of the oeuvre of this legendary artist, reflecting the multiple ambiguities in the staging of his remarkable images.

April 29 – September 2, 2018

This ambitious exhibition will be the first to study in depth the parallel, creative careers of two of the 20th century’s most influential artists: Alberto Giacometti and Francis Bacon.

The exhibition is devoted to a previously little explored aspect of Paul Klee’s work, namely abstraction. In the first half of the twentieth century, the move away from figurativeness and the development of abstract art became a key theme for many European artists. The Swiss artist Paul Klee also responded to this challenge: the almost 10,000 works he created in the course of his career include exciting examples of the development of abstract pictorial worlds and of the processes of abstraction in painting. The key aspects of Klee’s abstract works are, moreover, a central strand of his entire oeuvre: nature, architecture, music and written characters.

To mark its twentieth anniversary, the Fondation Beyeler is presenting one of the most important and best-loved artists: Claude Monet. The exhibition will be a celebration of light and color, illustrating the artistic development of the great French painter from Impressionism to his famous late work. It will feature his Mediterranean landscapes, wild Atlantic coastal scenes, different stretches of the Seine, meadows with wild fl owers haystacks, water lilies, cathedrals, and bridges shrouded in fog. In his paintings, Monet experimented with changing light and color effects in the course of a day and in different seasons. He succeeded in evoking magical moods through reflections and shadows.
